Naysayers who’ve been complaining about the slow pace of the past few “Game of Thrones” episodes were shut down with an action-packed episode 9, which aired Sunday night on HBO.

Many likely expected the episode — aptly titled “Battle of the Bastards” — to open with Jon Snow (Kit Harington, “Pompeii,” 2014) and Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon, “Misfits”), but the show opened in Meereen where Daenerys (Emilia Clarke, “Terminator Genisys,” 2015) and Tyrion (Peter Dinklage, “The Station Agent,” 2003) handily disposed of the Great Masters, with the help of a few dragons and the Dothraki of course.

Love them or hate them, there’s nothing like a family reunion, and “Game of Thrones’” fourth episode of season 6 kicked off with a doozy last night. Fans cried a collective “yes!” as Sansa (Sophie Turner, “The Thirteenth Tale”) and Jon (Kit Harington, “Pompeii,” 2014) were reunited at Castle Black. The reunion was that much sweeter when Sansa showed her true Stark colours and insisted she and Jon return to Winterfell to take back their home from Ramsay (Iwan Rheon, “Misfits”), aka the new “Lord of the North.” Her turn from damsel in distress to instigator made her one of many strong females in the action-packed episode, undoubtedly the best of the season so far. He’s alive! Despite her lack of confidence, Melisandre (Clarice van Houten, “Valkyrie,” 2008) appears to have better magic than most. Jon Snow (Kit Harington, “Pompeii,” 2014) escaped his dalliance with Death with his wits intact, at least it appeared so as he met with the other crows and wildlings that had liberated Castle Black from the traitors.

Meanwhile, somewhere on the high seas, Jon’s bestie Samwell Tarly (John Bradley, “Shameless”) battled seasickness on his way to Old Town to train as a maester. He broke the news to an excited Gilly (Hannah Murray, “Skins”) that she won’t be able to come to the citadel with him and will have to stay at his family’s home with little Sam instead.

“Game of Thrones” fans enjoyed more tasty treats in episode 2 of season 6. The excitement began even before the opening credits rolled when viewers finally got a glimpse of Bran Stark (Isaac Hampstead-Wright, “Closed Circuit,” 2014), who hasn’t been seen since the end of season 4.

The Three-Eyed Raven (Max von Sydow, “Awakenings,” 1990) acted as Bran’s “Ghost of Winterfell Past” and shared a vision of his father, Ned Stark (Sebastian Croft, “Houdini & Doyle”) as a boy. The trip down memory lane revealed that gentle giant Hodor (Kristian Nairn, “Four Warriors,” 2015) was once known as Willis and was handy with a sword. (more…)

The Recap Sequence

If you’re one of the few who didn’t watch “Game of Thrones” last night on HBO, here’s a spoiler for you: Jon Snow (Kit Harington, “Pompeii,” 2014) IS dead…at least for now. But viewers who got a revealing look at the Red Woman’s nighttime routine know Melisandre (Clarice van Houten, “Valkyrie,” 2008) must wield some powerful juju so that may change.

As Davos (Liam Cunningham, “The Numbers Station,” 2013) and the rest of Jon’s allies awaited reinforcements, viewers got the scoop on what else has been happening in the Seven Kingdoms.

While many likely felt frustrated by the lack of answers in the season 6 premiere, there was at least some payoff for loyal fans. Just when all hope seemed lost for Sansa (Sophie Turner, “The Thirteenth Tale”) and Reek (Alfie Allen, “Soulboy,” 2010), Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” 2015) arrived to show Ramsay’s men what’s what. Even better, Theon (that’s right — not Reek, Theon) saved Podrick’s (Daniel Portman, “River City”) ass during the battle. (more…)
